Like the rest of the UK, we watched the latest series of The Traitors at the start of the year.
And when I saw “we”, I mean all of us.
The kids jumped on the Celebrity edition at the end of last year, and when they saw Claudia Winkleman’s fringe advertising the newest ‘civilian’ series, they wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer.
And to be honest, not a single part of us wanted to say no – it’s an absolute delight that they’re at the age where we can watch and enjoy the same things as them (see also Gladiators, Would I Lie To You and Strictly), and we’ve had some lovely evenings in front of the fire, guessing who’s going to get banished, and critiquing the contestants’ body language.
The enthusiasm for the show isn’t just confined to watching it – they’re playing it in the playground, they’re making Traitors-themed ‘Choose your own adventure’ books, and asking everyone we see whether they’re a faithful or a traitor.
And that’s the first takeaway for today – when content captivates, it creates an omnipresence that pretty much guarantees attention.
Create something that really resonates with your audience, and it’ll have residual value beyond the moment where they consume it – it’ll stay in their mind, it’ll inform their conversations, it’ll influence their decisions.
The second takeaway? Well, our eldest Jim is quite the saver, and until yesterday, he had a full piggy bank.
It’s no longer full, thanks to his decision to buy a long, green Traitors style cloak, like the one pictured above.
His purchase proves an eternal truth of marketing, that we’d all do well to remember:
People buy first on emotion, and then justify with logic.
