I bought some new earrings at our local artisan market at the weekend.

Not my usual style, but the moment I saw them, I knew I couldn’t just leave old Hairy there on the peg.

Nostalgia can do silly things to people, but there was nothing silly about the marketing that tripled my spend on that stand.

The people behind this little business had plopped a very simple spinning wheel of fortune right in the middle of the stall.

“Spend £10 for a free spin, prizes guaranteed.”

The Hairy Maclary earrings were £7, so if I wanted a spin, I’d have to spend some more.

And yes, you’ve guessed it, I did want a spin, and ended up leaving the stall with a little Elmer keyring for my daughter Effy, and some more beautiful earrings; a pair of matching Pringle pots to dangle below my poor lobes.

All to get my go on the wheel of fortune, and receive apostcard and a sticky, slappy hand thingy that’s worth about 5p as my prize (And which was broken by my children a few short minutes later.)

Even (ahem) very smart and sophisticated people like me are prepared to part with more cash when you put a good enough reason right in front of them.

(No comments about the Pringles earrings at this point, please.)
